Online Courses - MOOCs

University at Buffalo spring break scheduleThe best college for a student is not necessarily the highest ranking in the Forbes or US News listings, but the college that offers a student the most rewarding career chances. If you focus your degree choices on salary alone, there's greater risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular, four-year college, and you may earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your degree courses online, you also may be able to graduate earlier, saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your spare time to advance your present career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing cloud-based software and Google apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree earned on campus. Udemy online learning, a site which allows anyone to take online courses, is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Khan Academy now offers over 3,900 micro-lectures available via YouTube. Coursera, another online-learning software platform, has millions of enrolled students around the world. The financial crisis likely has strengthened the need for people trained in computer programming, healthcare, and small business management. An associates degree can save you time and money, by transferring later to a regular 4-year degree program. Some careers that require an associates degree include becoming a dental assistant, occupational or physical therapy assistant, or licensed practical nurse (LPN). Students will impress future bosses more with an impressive portfolio than with an advanced degree, so practice your skills as a consultant for local companies. The greatest downside to an associates degree in the job market is that you will be competing with individuals holding bachelors degrees. Therefore, make sure you're comfortable in the niche you've chosen, and have developed strong job skills.

In order to become an RN (Registered Nurse), a bachelors degree in nursing is recommended. RN's command a greater salary, and are responsible for an enlarged scope of practice over LPNs and CNAs. Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
